Started in the late 1950s, the Botanic Gardens began with the planting of specimen trees and shrubs near Townsend Hall at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), which supported undergraduate care and study. Through the initial coursework, the plantings evolved into the incredible gardens on the campus today. The Botanic Gardens now span across 12 gardens on 15 acres and can still be used by students, faculty, and the public as well as Green Industry professionals. The expansive gardens’ primary role is to continue to support CANR in its programs, such as horticulture, plant science, entomology, and landscape design.
Conveniently located just 12 minutes from Liberty Pointe, the gardens are open from sunrise to sunset, every day. Though no admission is required, donations are appreciated. Enjoy beautiful self-guided walking tours throughout with the university’s detailed maps and information, allowing you to take in the exceptional calm within the garden space. When entertaining visiting friends and family at our apartments near the University of Delaware, guided tours are available for groups of 10 or more with staff to provide knowledge and expertise as you wander through the flowering plants and green shrubbery.
